The article "Differentiating by Offering Choices" explains why teachers shouldn't require such strict guidelines for an assignment. Giving students some freedoms in how they learn and how they present what they've learned allows students to develop a self-reflective mindset that will continue to benefit them throughout life. Another important tool technology gives us is the ability to create e-portfolios. When students can compile all of their work to review and see their growth, they are more encouraged to be involved in their education.
- Something that I read and will continue to think about as a teacher is that "assessment should be more about the process than the product."
- Allowing students to chose how they present an assignment can highlight certain skills that otherwise wouldn't be noticed.
- Offering a choice in presentation of knowledge gives the student self-motivation along with the confidence to continue in their education.
This article has provided an insight to the importance of creativity in the classroom. While allowing students more freedom may create more work for the teacher, the outcome will always be worth the effort. I was interested in teaching because I want to make a difference in the lives of my students, and small techniques like the ones outlined in this article are the way to achieve that.
